Mandarin
At Grosvenor Park Primary School we intend to deliver a high quality language education to foster pupil’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. It is our intent that through the teaching and learning of Mandarin, children will develop and acquire language skills alongside gaining knowledge and understanding of a culture and lifestyle that differs from their own.
We are committed to broadening children’s knowledge of the wider world by promoting other countries and cultures and the potential opportunities that they may offer in terms of travel, study and work in their future.
Underpinning all of this, we aim to teach the Fundamental British Values (defined by our school) by developing:
- adaptable children who are required to utilise their existing language and learning skills to make links, problem solve, apply and retain new vocabulary and knowledge.
- Expressive children with skills which focus on the acquisition of Mandarin through speaking, listening, reading and writing with an emphasis on practical communication.
- co-operative individuals through working collaboratively when practising and exploring new words and phrases through speaking and listening activities.
- adventurous individuals whose curiosity about the wider world is piqued. Raising awareness of another culture enables children to develop their own independent lines of enquiry based on what fascinates or is of interest to them.
- children’s are active when acquiring and applying new foreign language skills; children will think about the basic grammar appropriate to Mandarin and consider how these differ or are similar to the English language. Active language acquisition through frequent practise of speaking, listening, reading and writing of Mandarin
- Children who are respectful of other cultures and lifestyles.
