Grosvenor Park Primary School

Design and technology

At Grosvenor Park Primary School we intend to develop children’s knowledge and skills in DT by providing pupils with opportunities to problem solve in a wide range contexts. Our intent is for our children to develop the technical knowledge of design and to make their designs (using a range of materials, tools and equipment). We intend for our children to develop their ability to evaluate their own products or those already available.

By using a variety of contexts, we intend to inspire children to question how they can develop their own DT skills. Through visiting local landmarks; discussing and enquiring about global developments in technology; tasting and cooking different foods and using a range of building tools, our pupils will be able to develop their understanding of the impact of design and technology in local and global environments.

Underpinning all of this we aim to teach the Fundamental British Values (defined by our school) by developing:

  • adaptable children who are able to understand what skills are needed to design and make a product, whilst being resourceful and innovative to harness their creativity
  • co-operative individuals who are able to share and use a collection of ideas to develop one product while supportively solving problems within their enterprise together
  • children who can enhance their creative and imaginative ideas by expressing their concepts and plans through different resources and disciplines
  • children can develop a curiosity about how products are created and have a critical understanding of the impact of different disciplines on the design and creation of a product
  • resilient children who are able to problem solve effectively, be resourceful and take risks during their enterprise
  • children who respect the needs, wants and values of their target audience and the people that they are working with to complete a project
  • children can be active and adventurous in their approach to dissembling previous products and making prototypes to then use this knowledge to be ambitious within their own ideas and designs.

EYFS build the foundations for Design and technology across the year. See EYFS curriculum for more in depth information about their curriculum
