This term, Class 5 will be reading 'The Rainbow Fish' by Marcus Pfister and 'Toys in Space' by Mini Grey.
The children will spend some time reading and exploring the texts before taking part in various activities, including drama, to learn more about the different elements of stories. Non-fiction texts and poetry linked to the theme of each book will also be a feature of each unit of work.
Throughout these units, there will be a big focus on sentence structure to ensure that the children can formulate interesting sentences which are correctly punctuated. The children will learn about different parts of sentences and how sentences can be enhanced through making simple changes and additions to their writing. They will be developing their use of descriptive vocabulary by using powerful verbs and combining adjectives and nouns to create noun phrases.
As the term progresses, children will be provided with opportunities to develop their use of joining words (and, but, so, because) to add detail and description in their writing.
Throughout the year, there will be a focus on developing skills in phonics, spelling and reading through daily Phonics, spelling and Guided Reading sessions. The children will also continue to practise their handwriting skills.
